OWF Project

For this project, we were asked to create a short film that represents a single assigned word. The objective was to convey meaning and emotion without using any sound. Instead, we had to rely on camera angles, and editing techniques to tell a story. The film needed to be between 60–90 seconds, shot entirely in the school setting, and developed through several steps: brainstorming, storyboarding, filming, and editing.

My Approach

The word my partner and I were assigned was curious. At first, we struggled to decide what type of story to create, especially since we were limited to only filming around school. Eventually, we decided to focus on showing curiosity through physical reactions using creative shots and movements to highlight that theme.

Brainstorming and Storyboarding

During brainstorming, we jotted down different story ideas and started sketching out potential shots. The brainstorming sheet was extremely helpful because it pushed us to think about how we would film specific scenes in advance.

The storyboard gave us a clear visual outline of the project before we started filming. By mapping out the sequence of shots, we were able to pre-visualize the film and understand how each moment would connect to the next. It also helped us avoid confusion during filming because we had a clear plan to follow.

For editing, we used IMovie to cut and arrange our footage. The editing stage was where we finalized the pacing of the story and made sure that the shots were chronologically correct from the brainstorming sheet. Since the film could not include any sound, we had to focus on the visuals and timing to keep the audience engaged.

Analysis:

Overall, I think my team and I did a good job working together to plan, film, and complete the project. We successfully communicated the meaning of our word by using creative camera shots. However, I would like to improve editing. While the film came together, I believe that with stronger editing techniques the story could feel more engaging and fun for the audience.
